Angel and Jorian Sandra S. Thompson Elementary School
Angel is a 5th grader chosen for his leadership skills. He helps where help is needed, volunteers first to work with others, explains concepts in ways understood by his peers, and is genuinely caring and patient. Angel says being in an inclusive classroom the last two years has taught him to be more respectful of others’ differences. He says having Mrs. Bohn in the classroom allows all the students to get the help they need. She is able to assist some students while Mrs. Slocum works with others.
Jorion is in an inclusive classroom for the first time this year and has made tremendous growth, both socially and academically. He follows the positive lead of typical peers, which is reinforced by adults (teachers or assistants) in the classroom, which has helped him gain confidence and become more independent. Jorion is now taking on the role of ‘helper’ and often reminds others of appropriate classroom behavior.
Andrew Steve Cozine Elementary School
Andrew is a 5th grade student who has attended Steve Cozine Elementary School since 1st grade. He is a student that has benefited from Inclusive School Practice through the cooperation of the classroom teachers and specialists to provide services in reading and writing. With the cooperation of his family, teachers and Andrew himself, he has become an active participant in his classroom and is a Peer Mediator. Andrew likes pets, swimming, reading mysteries and sharing stories about his family. Andrew feels that he is a very positive person who likes to make people laugh, participate in reader’s theater and wants to be a director when he grows up.
Tyler William E. Snyder Elementary School In the inclusive 4th grade classroom, Tyler is surrounded with his peers and is exposed to grade-level material. His writing ability is steadily improving and he is becoming a more responsible student. “Mr. Stork makes learning fun. He shows us tricks that help us learn. I am glad my teacher listens to me and makes sure I understand what I am learning. I am doing better this year because Mr. Stork believes I can learn,” Tyler says.
Clayton Charles Silvestri Junior High School Clayton, a 6th grader, joined a co-taught general education math class this year, and has been exposed to a much broader curriculum and social group. He has been successful in this class and feels more challenged. Clayton feels his school is a great place for learning. His favorite subjects are Math, Reading and English.
Jered Sue Morrow Elementary School As a 5th grade student, Jered has made a great deal of progress in an inclusive classroom. His grades have improved; he is taking pride in his work and is responsible for completing quality homework. Jered’s confidence is evident, and he has excelled doing the morning announcements which are broadcast throughout his school. Jered says he feels good about school and has learned a lot about cells and viruses in science.
